Bringing the Best of Winter Indoors
Written by Milan Jara on 23rd Dec 2014
One of the reasons that we like to be around creative people, aside from getting great ideas from them, is developing this notion that nothing is impossible. Over the years, my wife and I have used our artistic talents to help build winter wonderlands in the middle of tropical areas. It is fun to see kids playing in snow for the first time, even if the snow is fake. If there is one thing we have learned over the years, it is that there is nothing a good imagination cannot conquer, and that includes bringing the best of winter indoors.

Lots of Fake Snow
There are a lot of ways to make your own fake snow, but we find the easiest way is to shave blocks of Styrofoam and then drop the shavings in front of a fan. After you are done, you just need to vacuum up the shavings, and you can even save them for another indoor snowstorm if you want. We will go on record right now as saying that shaving actual ice to use as snow indoors is an extremely bad idea and we would not recommend it to anyone.
Building a Styrofoam Snowman
If you head over to your local craft store, you can find Styrofoam available in all shapes and sizes. If you want to build your own fake snowmen indoors, then get three different sizes of Styrofoam balls and attach them using toothpicks. The best way to do it is to stick a couple of toothpicks halfway into the bottom Styrofoam ball, then stick the other ball right on top of the toothpicks. Then you can add buttons for eyes, put a hat on him, and then make sure he stays warm with his own scarf.
Indoor Snowball Fights
Believe it or not, there are fake snowball kits out there you can buy to have safe snowball fights indoors. If you would rather make your own indoor snowballs, then get some small Styrofoam balls and put a little glue on them. Then, roll the balls in Epsom salt and allow them to dry. These work great because they are not so heavy that they will do any damage, but they are just heavy enough to throw across the room and knock someone’s hat off. Your other option is to get white construction paper and crumple it up into balls to be used as indoor snowballs. If you crumple the paper tightly enough, it actually works quite well.
Indoor Ice Skating
Whenever you see those old Christmas movies that feature classic outdoor scenes, you always see people ice skating. Well, you can go skating indoors as long as you promise to be careful. All you need to do is wrap your socked feet in waxed paper and you will be able to move like you are skating on just about any rug. Start off slow to get the hang of it and you will be doing figure-eights in no time.
Just because it is 90 degrees outside and sunny doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy a little winter fun in your own home. It just takes a little creativity and an eye on safety to help bring the fun of a winter’s afternoon into your own living room.
