DIY Decor for Renters

Written by Milan Jara on 5th May 2015

We know a lot of people who live in apartments and they are always looking for creative ways to change up their decor. Our belief is that just because you live in an apartment does not mean that you have to suffer with boring spaces. There are plenty of inexpensive and temporary ways that you can dress up your apartment, without losing your security deposit.

Floor Coverings

If your apartment has hardwood or laminate floors, then you have plenty of room to create a decor that is all your own. Throw rugs with patterns or designs on them can add some color to any bedroom and an area rug in the living room can give the room an entirely new look.

Paint Your Wood Furniture

You may not be able to paint the walls in your apartment, but you can paint your own wood furniture and give some color and character to every room. Go from room to room and use a color theme to paint your wood furniture a variety of colors. For the cost of a few quarts of paint, you can add color that can go with you when you move.

Turn One Room into Two

If you have one of those huge apartment rooms that seems too big to just be a living room, then you have some potential for new decor ideas. Instead of spreading your furniture out over the entire room, move the furniture so that you have a living room and a playroom for your kids without spending an extra dime. Move the furniture in a little closer around the television and you will see a whole new room of opportunity open up for you to use. With some play mats for the kids, you can protect the floor and create an area where the whole family can be together for hours.

Wall Art

When you rent an apartment, wall art suddenly becomes very important in terms of interior decor. Instead of painting a room or putting up wallpaper, you can put up wall art and create a very unique room. Don’t limit yourself to just the stuff that you find in stores, either. For example, hanging some colorful tapestries on the walls of your living room will add color that you can take down quickly and take wherever you go.

Ceiling Tiles

Most ceiling tiles are light and very easy to install. You can use something as non-invasive as poster hanging putty to put up ceiling tiles on your walls and your ceiling to create a unique look. Of course, we would benefit from your ceiling tile designs as well. But when you see what kinds of tiles we have for sale and realize how truly light these tiles are, you will wonder why you waited so long to put them up in your apartment.

As creative people, we tend to find the beauty in every situation. When our friends who rent apartments complain that they cannot create a look they like, we just tell them to get creative and think outside the box. With a little creativity, you can make your apartment look like your personality for little to no money. The best part is that you can take it all with you when you move.
