Why You Should Join the Tiny Home Movement
Written by Milan Jara on 14th Jul 2015
Imagine if you had to live in a home that was only 300 or 500 square feet in size. How would you do it? We are talking about putting an entire home in something the size of a pop-up camper. Even a Winnebago would seem like a palace compared to what people are referring to as tiny homes. Why are people doing this, and is it something you should consider for yourself?

Tiny Homes Mean Tiny Bills
Tiny homes have become such a phenomenon that there are television shows dedicated to people and their 500-square-foot homes. When you watch the tours of these homes, you see how ingenious people can be when it comes to conserving space. From work desks that fold out into beds to stairs that are actually storage bins, people are really getting creative with their tiny homes. But why?
The concept of tiny homes has been around for years, but it is gaining in popularity because of how expensive it is becoming to live in some parts of the world. Instead of paying rent or a mortgage on a 1,500-square-foot home, people are preferring to put their 500-square-foot tiny home on a trailer and live away from society. Throw a few solar panels on the roof and you can stay off the grid but still enjoy the electronic amenities of life.
There Are Limits
Tiny homes don’t work so well for a family of four, and in most cases, a tiny home requires a tiny detached storage shed for storing stuff. You don’t have to put your tiny home on a trailer, but it does make it easier to move if your property taxes suddenly go up and you decide to sell your property and move on.
Another limitation to tiny homes is heat and electricity. Some people are able to go off the grid with a propane tank for heating and solar panels for electricity, but there are many tiny homes attached to the grid that pay tiny energy bills each month. Even though they are attached to the public utility grid and use the municipal water systems, their bills are still significantly lower than the larger homes in the area.
Should You Get a Tiny Home?
While economics is a big reason for tiny homes, it is not the only reason that people make these lifestyle changes. Some people just want to strip their lives down to the bare necessities and get away from the rest of the world. Honestly, we can’t blame them. These folks embrace living in a tiny house in the woods, which sounds like a long vacation to us.
What we are trying to say is that swapping a regular-sized home for a tiny home is more than just an economic decision. It is a complete change in lifestyle that will take some getting used to. For couples, it can mean having nowhere to get away from each other in those heated moments, but it can also create one of the most cozy living environments ever.
